Heated ski socks
Within the last few years, there has been a development of “smart wool” that allows for heated ski socks to exist. Although the details can be complicated, the process is fairly simple – these socks work by using a conductive fiber along with the wool.
When these socks are created, a mixture of wool and these fibers are added together. This creates a surface of interconnected fibers that creates enough resistance to be heated. However, all of the wool-like properties are retained.
Heated ski socks are actually kept warm thanks to a small battery about the size of batteries that are used in mobile phones. Because these batteries could be a hindrance for skiers, they are often placed on the ski boot instead of being placed on the sock. This allows skiers to not need to worry about the discomfort that could be associated with having a battery inside their socks.
Although those who use heated ski socks are likely to find that the socks are effective at keeping their feet warm, they might be disappointed to find out that the batteries used for these socks are typically only able to hold a charge for around three or four hours.
Some skiers combat this by bringing extra batteries with them and switching out the battery after one has been depleted; however this is somewhat awkward and inconvenient. Work is being done to increase the lives of these batteries so that they would be able to be used for an entire day before needing to be recharged.
Although heated ski socks may not be the most flexible socks, they are certainly the warmest. |
